JJ: This past week we watched Wanderlust and traveled to Fairhope, AL, which got us thinking a lot about intentional communities. I asked my friend Clay Parks to join our discussion. He’s looking to start an intentional community in Missouri. Below are his answers to the questions that we presented him.

Clay: Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you feel that starting an intentional community is the best way to create community.
→ My wife and I (Clay Parks) live in St. Louis, MO. We’re in our 20’s and have our first child on the way. Clay is a social worker and Hannah is a yoga teacher but attending nursing school in the next year. We’re Eastern Orthodox Christians, so most of these answers will have that flavor. We try our best to live a simple life in living sustainably and being charitable to others. We’ve been a part of two intentional communities one in Seattle, WA with Mennonite 20-somethings and an intentional church community in Philadelphia, PA. I researched intentional communities for my M.Th, see the attached document.

The attribute of vulnerability in facing your fears of the “other,” your own prejudices, and embracing the unpredictable is the blessed norm within an intentional community; difficult tasks to foster in a less-open place.

Clay: Why would you be interested in starting an intentional community versus living in a neighborhood and fostering community through church or other social gatherings?
→ Fostering community through church and social gatherings is an incredibly good thing and by no means something to poo-poo on. The choice to live in an intentional community is a selfish one: we believe in and love the power of food, primarily a home cooked meal. Jesus liked food. He went to dinner parties and hung out with the outcasts and these people went away changed. We’ve found that there is something special about sharing conversation over a crowded table, delicious fare on fork, and maybe some fresh brewed coffee in hand. Something happens when yummy food is present; vulnerability happens, deep questions arise, and listening (mostly forced because of chewing) becomes a bit more intently. Around the table, you’re able to discuss subjects that aren’t necessarily suitable at church or the local civic group (although it’s possible) such as: the relationship between Jesus and the Buddhist tradition; the role of Christian anarchism; or the option of electing not to vote.

Clay: What are some benefits to starting an intentional community?
→ One benefit to starting an intentional community is that it stretches and grows you. Jesus said “blessed are the poor.” He didn’t say “blessed are those who help the poor.” Something about the poor (those who face material, spiritual, and physical poverty) is blessed. It’s hard to describe to someone who doesn’t have experience being with the poor, but something changes you when you spend time with someone who is poor. Mother Teresa used to often talk about seeing the face of Jesus in the poor (see Matthew chapter 25). Now, one can meet, serve, eat with the poor at church or the local organization, but can leave right afterward and go to the safety of their home. To have someone who is poor live in your intentional community or house and to support them in their need, in that special, blessed vulnerability you often find that you are the one who is truly poor and your poor friend is rich.

Clay: What are some drawbacks to starting an intentional community?
→ The people. It’s hard to deal with people at times and unless your community is determined and well-versed in conflict resolution, look out!

Clay: What are some details about the intentional community that you are starting?
→ Well, we’re going to try our best to be focused on the following attributes that are apart of the New Monasticism movement:
The “Twelve Marks” of new monasticism express the common thread of many new monastic communities. These “marks” are:

  1. Relocation to the “abandoned places of Empire” [at the margins of society]
  2. Sharing economic resources with fellow community members and the needy among us
  3. Hospitality to the stranger
  4. Lament for racial divisions within the church and our communities combined with the active pursuit of a just reconciliation
  5. Humble submission to Christ’s body, the Church
  6. Intentional formation in the way of Christ and the rule of the community along the lines of the old novitiate
  7. Nurturing common life among members of an intentional community
  8. Support for celibate singles alongside monogamous married couples and their children
  9. Geographical proximity to community members who share a common rule of life
  10. Care for the plot of God’s earth given to us along with support of our local economies
  11. Peacemaking in the midst of violence and conflict resolution within communities along the lines of Matthew 18
  12. Commitment to a disciplined contemplative life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Monasticism#Common_themes)

Our community (tentatively named “Philokalia Place” Philokalia=”love of all things beautiful”) will try our best to live out the 12 characteristics but will look a bit different:

We plan to focus on sharing a common rule of life through following the hours of prayer, doing a weekly vespers service at our house, fasting and feasting through the liturgical calendar, and celebrating and consoling each other.

We plan to face our own fears and questions by: welcoming guest speakers of other religions, creeds and lifestyles; watching documentaries to stretch us; and welcome our friends, family, nomads, and those in need to share our space with us.

We have a little backyard farm growing with chickens and plan to share our eggs and the fruits of our labor with our neighbors. We hope to celebrate with friends and strangers through parties, potlucks and dinners, game nights, and discussion groups.

Clay: Why would it be important that each member of the community share the same values?

Clay: What do you do if one member rejects the tenants of the community?
→ Have to take every individual situation when it comes and handle it uniquely. Questions have to be asked why does this person dislike the idea of the other tenant living in community. Is it because of fear? If so, how can we alleviate those fears? Is it because the person straight up doesn’t like the other person? That will have to be worked through in creative ways (translation: I don’t have an answer).

Clay: How do you plan to avoid the social stigmas that are typically associated with intentional communities?
→ You have to bless/love/benefit the community and invite others to come along and participate.

    As there was a fellow in Pennsylvania interested in starting an intentional community in the Appalachians years ago. Which there are two agrarian charitable Catholic communities in Appalachia.
    Where there’s more people interested but they’re dispersed.
    Too many chiefs and not enough Indians can be a problem. But if everyone considers another as themself, which takes some introspection and actually thinking, one doesn’t need a ruler. As overcoming cultural conditioning, social conditioning is a challenge by itself.
    But, it can be done. Cooperation is a big thing. Dropping shoes is another thing, as it’s the b ad kind of pride.
    Learning about group cohesion is important. Realizing others have different temperaments and personalities matters, knowing something about personalities makes a benefit.
    There’s some types of people who look at another person as how can I use this person, what benefit is he to me in their assessments of others, some only do it subconsciously. Then you have the oh so holy or the oh so guilty that will search out anothers’ faults and flaws without mercy. I’m fact the Bible references these types as being evil and wicked. Taking private councils, wetting their darts they’ll throw, etc. Rationalizing how not to like someone or finding a reason not to like someone. There’s some character flaws that stand out and are reputed for causing issues.
    Then there’s power mongers, there’s the intentional pests and nuisances, those who’re passive aggressive. Hmmm, I just noticed Who’re for who are, looked like whore. Then there’s those that like to mix in drama, no reason other than liking drama.
    But then there’s healthy people who enjoy others, they love communion with God through worship. But there’s sick people who’ll neglect another, say for worship of God, putting one before the other, never realizing if we neglect another, we’re going against God. As God desires is to regard each other as ones’ self. Now some of us are simply messed up, no doubt, which tolerance is needed. As some are claustraphobic, me, some are like a bull in a china shop, me, some of us are moody and getv taken over by thoughts, me, etc. Some are very social and need positive interactions with others to be healthy, some are introverts and need time alone. Some of us need time alone to heal our minds. So many things that if someone thinks of rules and thing, they’re creating an unhealthy atmosphere.
    Just like Maslows’ Hierarchy of Needs, it’s very valid. Which you can look up. But, seldom does it mention the fact that there’s different levels of gratification to satisfy different people. Look at interpersonal relationships where one is more frugal, the other is more liberal financially. The liberal minded feels secure spending what’s available. Where the more frugal might feel almost terror being so easily separated from money. Which the Bible means toward the more frugal, staying storing things up like the ant, maybe squirrels, reference to many things that store up, just as Joseph did knowing of a coming famine. Then we’re told, owe no man anything but to love him. Then the borrower is always servant to the lender. Which a person can be made to do wrong or not act when they should (1 definition of sin, when it’s in your hands to do good and you do not), but common sense says, referencing Moses, be circumspect in all I command you. Otherwords, creating a methane ingester to dispose of sewer, manure, barn hay, other vegetation may require to borrow money, but the methane produced could reduce the bill that would be paid for electricity. So exchanging one payment for another that’ll eventually be paid off is wise vs. always being in debt. Or using the methane to power a boiler that powers a turbine that powers a generator. Or building a damn to build a watershed to drive a ge generator while creating a pond at the same time that can be reserve for fish and aquatic plants as rice, marshmallow, of course designing a pond to be productive, as well as being a source for irrigation a nd watering lifestock and fowl. Choosing the right location where a creek comes down hill, or a mess river, channels can be made to pass cool water through a hot barn in summer as well as being a duct to sweep barn refuse into, to be washed out and into a methane ingester, even a simple earthen ingester. Which after extraction, waste is a very rich fertilizer. So, removed and cures as my drying then sowed in fields gives an organic fertilizer.
    Just my two cents worth.

  2. Oh I fergot, Rossel kill in Alabama. In the 70’a there was a bad heatwave where many people were dying across the country. We want to this creek, it was ice cold. Ever heard of geothermal heating and cooling? With thermal lines in that creek, it’s surely cool off a big home. Running through a barn, it’s help draw out heat if some right. With an aluminum roof, it could flow over and displace a lot of heat. Which with animals, they’d be very grateful. A righteous man regards the life of his beast.
    Which geothermal heating and cooling, ductwork to wash water across the property to do work as easy hat and manure waste to a methane ingester, or other channels to do other things is smart.
    Solar batch heater, or solar hot water heater can significantly reduce electrical costs.
    Laying out a pond with varying depths, including shallows for fry, crawfish, plants from a dammed creek that serves as a watering home and irrigation for gardens, fields, etc.
    Which could probably support bamboo growth, which would could be used for drip irrigation which is very efficient and beneficial to growing.
    Any Orthodox or others interested, talk to me. Even wiccans. Not Taking away from my faith, but wiccans have part of the faith, being concerned about the earth and stewards of the earth, not doing any evil, being kind, regard for nature, using the earth as not abusing it. Then all the herbs with medicinal values. Where not everyone has faith. Faith itself is a gift, I think?
